Best cleaning, best fabric protection, built for 20 years. Miele's honeycomb drum and TwinDos automatic detergent system are genuinely innovative. At $1,699 it's the most expensive washer in this guide โ and the only one I'd call a long-term investment with confidence.

Commercial-grade components, mechanical controls, 7-year warranty. If you want a washer you will never have to think about again, this is it. The agitator cleans heavy loads better than any front-loader. Delicates require a mesh bag.

5.3 cu. ft. drum is the largest in this guide. AI cycle detection is impressive when it works. Best-looking front-loader tested. Disable the AI and run manual cycles for most consistent results.

Front-Load vs. Top-Load โ The Real Difference
Front-loaders use less water, are gentler on clothes, and clean better on average. Top-load agitators clean heavy soils better and are simpler to repair. Top-load HE (impeller, no agitator) is the worst of both worlds โ water-efficient but weaker cleaning than agitator, and harder on clothes than front-load. If you have heavily soiled loads regularly (kids, work clothes, sports), get an agitator or front-loader. Don't get HE top-load.
Reliability โ What the Data Actually Shows
Speed Queen has the best documented repair rate by a large margin, followed by Miele. LG and Samsung rank in the middle. Whirlpool/Maytag above average. GE average. Electrolux below average for washers specifically. Extended repair data from Consumer Reports and J.D. Power consistently show this ranking.
How Much Capacity Do You Actually Need?
A family of 4 doing laundry twice a week can manage with 4.5 cu. ft. A family of 6 or anyone with king bedding benefits from 5.0+ cu. ft. Bigger is generally better, but drums over 5.5 cu. ft. in front-loaders can have unbalanced load issues on small loads.
