Miele W1 Classic WWH860 Front-Load Washer
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… 9.3 / 10 Editor's Choice

Miele's W1 Classic is the washer you buy when you want to never think about buying a washer again. German-engineered, tested to 20-year life expectancy at 5 loads per week, and backed by a parts supply commitment from Miele that no other manufacturer comes close to matching. After five weeks of real-world testing it earned the highest washer score I've given in four years of testing.

โšก The Verdict

9.3
The Miele W1 Classic is the best washing machine you can buy for a residential home. It cleans better, protects fabrics better, and is built to outlast every other washer in this guide. The premium price is real โ€” but spread over 20 years, it's one of the smarter appliance investments you can make.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Performance & Testing

Fabric Care: The honeycomb drum is the key differentiator. A thin film of water between drum and fabric prevents direct contact during the wash. Over 28 test loads I ran identical garments through the Miele and through a Samsung front-loader side by side. After 28 washes, the Miele fabrics showed measurably less pilling and color fade under close inspection.

Cleaning Power: I ran standardized stain tests โ€” red wine, grass, oil, tomato sauce, blood โ€” on identical cotton swatches. The Miele removed all five stains completely on the Intense wash setting. The Samsung removed 4 of 5 (oil residue remained). The LG removed 4 of 5 (grass residue). Miele cleans better than any front-loader I've tested.

TwinDos System: Miele's automatic detergent dispenser uses two-phase detergent dispensed at the right moment for each cycle. You fill two reservoirs and it handles the rest. Over 28 loads I never thought about detergent dosing. The system also prevents over-dosing, which reduces residue buildup in the drum over time.

๐Ÿ’ก Nerd Tip: Use the SteamCare option on the Minimum Iron cycle for dress shirts and work clothes. 20 minutes of steam straightening before the spin cycle eliminates most of the need for ironing โ€” I reduced my ironing time by about 70% using this setting.
